Prospecting is one of the first steps in Network Marketing to determine who will be your business partners or product customers. The process consists of identifying potential customers or business builders to join you in your Network Marketing business. The goal of prospecting is to develop a database of likely customers and then communicate with them in the hopes of converting them from potential customers to current customers.

What’s The Difference Between Marketing And Prospecting?

Marketing is what you do when you want someone to reach out to you through your marketing methods without you having ever spoken to or met them. With marketing, someone reaches out to you based on something you have done to get a response from them.

Prospecting is when you reach out to someone directly either by phone call or on social media. With prospecting, you make direct contact with the person. The most successful Network Marketers employ a combination of marketing and prospecting.

Who Are You Prospecting To?

Before you start any type of prospecting in Network Marketing, make sure you know who you are prospecting for. Who is your ideal prospect?

One of the most important things to learn about prospecting is who to prospect to. All too often people think they should be prospecting to everyone that breathes. This is the wrong approach to prospecting if you plan on being successful.

A better approach is to really narrow down exactly who your ideal customer is and prospect them. The secret is to really narrow down your ideal prospect by classifying your ideal customer. It doesn’t matter if you are promoting the products or the business opportunity you need to narrow down and target your ideal prospect.

Here are some things you need to know about your ideal prospect.

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Income
  • Special group affiliations
  • Have they been a Network Marketer before
  • Are they a buyer

These are just some of the important pieces of information that will help you narrow down who your ideal customer is. This information is available through various buyer’s lists online and or simply by buying leads online.

The point is your prospecting will be much more effective if the people you are prospecting are interested in what you have to offer.

You can use direct mail postcards and letters the same as you would calling people to prospect. You can say exactly what you want to say and get your message directly to them so they can take action.

This method of prospecting is one I’ve witnessed a lot of people use to build a solid 6-figure income. You are calling people that have already raised their hands interested in a home-based business.

Some people have a hard time prospecting because they are afraid of what people will think of them. Before I was proficient at prospecting I was afraid to contact people. I was afraid of what my prospects would think of me. I was also afraid of what my friends and family would think if they discovered what I do. Because of the negativity surrounding affiliate marketing and network marketing I didn’t want people to affiliate me with those ‘types’ of businesses.

My fears were based on false assumptions and false evidence. My fears were mostly because I lacked the necessary skills to prospect like a professional. After I learned how to prospect and knew I was good at it I lost my fear of prospecting.
